Taiwan Day 706to708: “Full Strike: Typhoon Soudelor” - August 7-9, 2015

It was described as the most powerful typhoon. Typhoon Soudelor's one-minute average winds was even greater than Typhoon Haiyan(Yolanda) which struck the Philippines in 2013. I was really afraid of this typhoon upon reading the news from the internet. I live in the 5th floor and it's basically a rooftop made into a house. A Yolanda-like typhoon will definitely destroy my house.

Typhoon Soudelor gradually weaken as it approaches Taiwan. It was no longer as violent like Yolanda as initially reported but it brought tremendous amount of rain with the mountainous area of Taipingshan receiving the most amount. Landslides also occurred in the hotspring town of Wulai and 4 houses got immediatley buried under the mud.

Even as the Soudelor was leaving Taiwan for China its strong winds were still blowing strong in Taipei. A lot of trees were toppled forcing the city government to rethink its tree planting policy. A portion of the roof tiles of Taipei Main Station were also blown away.

It is the strongest typhoon that I have experienced in this island since Taiwan Day 1. The typhoon was expected to make a northwest direction but suddently went in a southwest direction direclty hitting Central Taiwan. A tornado was even spotted in Southern Taiwan. The typhoon was so huge that its clouds covered the whole island. The Philippines was saved but not my Taiwan. It was a “Full Strike: Typhoon Soudelor”.
