Travel like there is no pandemic. 10 places to see in Kaohsiung before you die!

Kaohsiung. Taiwan's biggest city in the south. There is no doubt that it is worth to visit.  To help you plan your itinerary, the luomujie blog has compiled the best places and things to do in Kaohsiung.

1. Tiger and Dragon Pagodas

A tiger and dragon in one majestic temple, standing above the waters of a serene lake.  This must be first your first stop in Kaohsiung.  With its proximity to the HSR Zuoying Station, board Bus XXX to get here.

Perfect for taking selfies especially the head of the dragons and the tiger. You might also get tempted to climb the two towers.  When you're at the top, look down below and feel like your one of the Taiwan gods.   Explore the back side of the temple connecting the towers and you can have a sight of the tails of the tiger and dragon.

2.  Dome of Light

Dome of Light. An icon of Kaohsiung.  Located at the KMRT (Kaohsiung MRT) Formosa Boulevard Station, it's a mortal sin not to include this spot when you come here to Kaohsiung.  It's like paying homage to the never ending creativity of the Taiwanese people.

With the circular design of the MRT Formosa Boulevard Station, the stained-glass Dome of Light will tease your imagination as you walk around the circumference of the main station hall.  At certain times of the day, there is a musical lights show illuminating the Dome of Light, attracting hundreds of visitors.  With so many tourists visiting the station every minute, you can only hope there is no photobomber in your selfies. Haha!

3. Kaohsiung Pier-2 Art Center

Another must-see place in Kaohsiung is the Pier-2 Art Center.   Old warehouses turned into valuable spaces for leisure and arts.  If you had been to Taipei's Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, you might already have been idea on what to expect at this place.  Whenever there is a seasonal exhibit in Kaohsiung, this is the best place to go.

But unlike it's counterpart in Taipei, Kaohsiung's Pier-2 Art Center is located along the shore with big shops dock on the pier.   The big boats of the Taiwan coast guard are stationed here and on one will stop you from taking pictures.  On a clear day, you can also get a glimpse of Kaohsiung's version Taipei 101, the 85 Sky Tower.

4. Kaohsiung Sightseeing Bus

Kaohsiung's HOHO (Hop on, Hop off) Bus will let you see many of the city's attractions in just one sitting.  Convenient for budget travelers, I highly recommend the Sizhiwan Route. It will pass by the popular attractions like the Love River and the sunset watching area of Sizhiwan.

You can buy your tickets via Klook and board the the bus at the designated stop located at Kaohsiung Pier-2.

5.  Love River

The lovely Love River. Perhaps, this is Kaohsiung City's most unique feature.  it is 12 kilometers long flows out into the Kaohsiung Harbor. It was polluted before but thanks to the efforts of the government, the water quality has improved a lot making it possible to use it for various recreational activities.

There are different ways to enjoy Love River and you can have fun whether it's day or night.

a. Kaohsiung Duck Boat

A hilariously looking amphibous vehicle that surprises passersby at the Love River.  I simply call it as the "duck boat". When I first saw it in photos, I got really excited to ride it for the first time.  I got my tickets at the Pier-2 Art Center near Warehouse #5.  Just ask the locals by showing photos of the "duck boat" on this blog post and they will surely lead you the way to buy the elusive tickets.

Adult tickets cost NTD 250 each.

There is a seat plan when you get a slot. So you better take note of the seating arrangement when you sign your name.

If you're wondering if the "duck boat" is waterproof once it touches the waters of the Lover, then prepare for trouble. Haha! Don't worry because there are life jackets inside.  The ride will start first like a normal bus journey, until when it enters a gate, which is the entrance to Love River.  The first splash was scary but I felt safe as the minutes passed by.  There is a narrator but you can appreciate it if you can understand Chinese.

b.  Kaohsiung Love Boat

A romantic way to enjoy Love River is the ride the Love Boat.  It is operated by the same company which runs the Kaohsiung Sightseeing Bus.  You can get your tickets at the Goubin Port at the riverside, with its opening hours from Monday to Friday every 15:00 to 22:00 and on weekends and Taiwan holidays from 9:00 to 22:00.

At night, the bridges of the riverside is illuminated making it perfect for a date with your boyfriend or girlfriend. The Love Boat will traverse the river and return on the port for a full 25-minute ride.

c.  Stroll along the river

The best time to do this is during the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival which happens two weeks after the Chinese New Year.  During the festivity, lanterns of various sizes and shapes are displayed along the riverside.

Combine with this a river cruise ride and you will have colorful experince at the Lover River. Don't also forget to watch the various street performances of the locals when the lanterns are lit.

9.  Kaohsiung Monkey Mountain

Monkey Mountain! I got intrigued when I first heard it from the hostel that I was staying.  A Google search led me to discover that there were free living monkeys on this mountain and I became really excited to visit this place.  On how free living macaques in a forest were able to coexist with the people of a big city made it more interesting.  A forest in a city.  A city in a forest.  There must be something unusual here.

Kaohsiung's mountain of monkeys is locally known as Shoushan.  It is classified as a nature park and a protected area under Taiwan's law.  Visitors usually go here to see the zoo but climbing its hiking trails is another way to see its beauty.   How to get here?  Board the Kaohsiung MRT and alight at Aozihdi Station.  Go to Exit 1 and transfer to either Bus Red 33 or Bus Red 32A to reach one of the entrance to the hiking trail.  The former would make a stop at Formosa Radio Station and you will need to walk for about 700 meters until you see a Buddhist temple. The latter makes a stop at Qian Li Si along Gushan 3rd Road which is nearer to the mountain. The start of the trail is on the back side of a temple but if you got lost in finding the concrete staircase then show the Chinese name of Shoushan National Nature Park (壽山國家自然公園) to any local.  The people of Gushan District will help you find the right way.

The hiking trail looks easy with its wooden staircase and then it suddenly becomes steep.  Without a warning, a troop of Formosan macaques might surprise you.  These monkeys are endemic to Taiwan and Shoushan is their natural home.  Visitors are warned not to show their food to the animals because they might become aggressive.  They look harmless but they should not be provoke in any way. Climbing a mountain for so long can make you feel hungry and sometimes people tend to forget the warnings in Monkey Mountain. Haha!

The Formosan macaques tend to follow the hikers because they think they have food.  If you come here, you might see them walking as a troop.  Climbing, running and jumping! It was fun to watch them especially when you see their red buttocks.  Aside from the monkeys, there are also other things to see in Shoushan like the Monkey Rock.  Like any other rock here in Gushan District, it was uplifted through powerful geologic forces revealing its underwater history.   There is also a good view of Kaohsiung City from the mountain and expect a breathtaking scenery on a sunny day.

After passing by the Lotus Rock and reaching the so called Booth, I felt the need to eat something.  I opened my bag to get a plastic containing loaves of bread.  Suddenly, all the hikers looked at me with wary. I took out one slice of bread until one monkey saw me.  Oops!  A monkey went near to and I immediately put the bread back inside my bag.  It was expecting to be given a piece of bread or worst steal my bag to be taken to the forest.

I moved to the observation platform where a view of the Taiwan Strait can be seen.  I sat there until one man said “hòumiàn ”.  A monkey went to my back and I immediately stood up because it was probably planning to open my knapsack.  As I relax on a bench, another visitor was given a warning.  A monkey was almost successful in stealing a plastic of food from his open bag.  The owner was fast to close it and the monkey got angry.  It showed its pointed teeth as if it was the one offended.  It was a bit scary but the rule here is just simple:  Don’t feed the animals.
